- Apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnosis and prevention (helped by clinical examination, laboratory results and exams available)
- If necessary prescribe relevant treatment according to MSF guidelines and protocols.
- Ensure a medical follow-up of quality and if necessary (and possible) refer to other health facilities.
- Apply hygiene standards in all medical activities.
- Keep informed the patient and his family about any development.
- Collaborate with nurses and team supervisor in indicating the needs in medical equipment and drugs.
- Ensure a daily round in the ward in the morning with a second examination in the afternoon.
- Examine all the patients using universal precautions.
- Take a history and perform a physical examination of new patients.
- Regularly examine all patients and identify possible medical, surgical or psychological problems.
- Inform the patient about his/her state and explain the treatment.
- Identify need for patients’ education.
- Ensure the respect for transfusion security in the ward.
- Ensure the follow up of infection parameters, results of cultures and antibiotic treatment.
- Ensure the follow up of pain control.
- Ensure the follow up of chronic and acute medical conditions.
- Ensure the follow-up concerning surgical issues: wound care, mobilisation, casts, slabs and tractions…
- Ensure comprehensive documentation in the patients' medical file in a timely and accurate manner diagnosis, lab exams, treatments, plan and discharge orders.
- Ensure the systematic and organized follow up of previous hospitalised patients in OPD.
- Ensure the follow-up of treatments of previous hospitalised patients, including short- term prescriptions and renewal of long-term prescriptions.
- Check the good course of medical activities within the ward (prescription correctly applied, necessary follow-up done…)
- Organise and work in collaboration with other wards and departments (OPD, OT, physiotherapy…)
- Ensure daily complete briefing to colleague medical ward doctor (and nurse supervisor and/or medical director if applicable).
- Take part to in house trainings of the staff (care, up date of protocols…)
- Participate to medical meetings.
