Develop and manage reward for locally engaged staff and teachers in British Council MENA within corporate guidelines which support business objectives. The job holder needs to operate on both a strategic policy and tactical implementation level.
The British Council works in 17 countries in MENA and employs 1,400 staff, the majority of whom are on local contracts. Just over 400 staff are teachers. Turnover is c £115m.
Amongst the HR challenges faced by the region are instability in many countries, responding quickly and flexibly to changing requirements, recruiting and retaining staff with key skills, capability and capacity of managers.
The Council is expanding its operations in MENA in all areas and this is requiring a more flexible and incentive based approach to pay. This is in addition to an established performance pay system and regular benchmarking of salary levels in each market. Benchmarking of teachers pay and benefits is an area requiring further development.

This new role will take forward the work started to ensure pay and reward fully contributes to the growth of the business.
The Head of Reward reports to the Regional Director of HR and will work closely with other members of the regional HR team who provide senior HR expertise to the region.
The role will support Regional Director HR by providing operational HR support to the regional team and senior leaders in region, as well as providing senior professional advice and support to country HR teams in all aspects of pay and reward.
The role will be key to ensuring that pay and reward frameworks provided in region are consistent with global HR principles and approach.
Responsibilities
Develop and manage pay and reward policy for locally engaged staff and teachers in the British Council MENA within corporate guidelines which support business objectives.
Provide an assurance role in ensuring regional consistency in implementation of reward initiatives
Ensure robust salary and benefits benchmarking across all markets to ensure informed decisions on pay reviews continue to be made. Assist Country Directors and HR managers in developing pay strategies and proposals.
Partner with Country management teams and the English SBU to ensure our teacher remuneration offer remains affordable and yet competitive in the talent market.
Oversee British Council job evaluation framework and lead on job evaluation of roles in MENA as a basis for grading and salary benchmarking. Maintain records on the SharePoint site as required corporately.
Partner with the English SBU (Strategic Business Unit) and Country management teams to ensure sales incentive schemes are rolled out which support business growth, use a consistent methodology and format across the region, and set suitably stretching targets. Schemes are reviewed for business impact, fairness and integrity.
Ensure business performance bonus schemes (e.g. used in Exams) support business growth, use a consistent methodology and format across the region, and set suitably stretching targets. Ensure schemes are reviewed for business impact, fairness and integrity.
Advise HR staff and recruiting managers on salaries and packages for candidates selected in recruitment.
