Summary

The OPD - Nurse Scheduler (ONS) is directly accountable the DON-OPD and has program accountability to the OPD System Re-engineering Program Lead.

The ONS will provide direct support to their assigned specialty within a designated OPD and is responsible for assisting the control desk staff in providing any clinical-related information to the patient. In essence, the ONS is the patient’s advocate during all stages of their OPD appointment to diagnosis and subsequent treatment within the hospital. Activities include: documentation, providing counseling, education, support and advice to patients and their families and carers.

In addition to patient duties, the post has a quality and service improvement dimension. The post-holder will

be required to apply service improvement tools and techniques to improve the patient’s OPD experience in line with the recommendations from the OPD Project Team and the OPD Management, and also contribute to clinical audit.

The post holder must critically think in variable situations within clearly defined policies, principles, and leadership direction with multiple healthcare stakeholders across the care delivery system.

Given the interface demanded by this role with both clinicians and patients, it is essential that the post-holder is a clinical professional, from a nursing or medical or allied healthcare professional background, possessing knowledge of the clinical pathways, medical terminology, and multidisciplinary clinical providers to which they are assigned and experience of coordinating the related clinical requirements of the patient’s OPD appointment pathway.

The positions also requires administrative functions with the OPD to ensure that all patient files, referrals, doctor availability, and other clinical information are in order prior to, during and following scheduled clinic time.

Uses initiative and experience to flag issues to the referring or treating Clinician and if necessary the DON -OPD

Contributes to OPD operational readiness and planning.
